Google says it will turn off Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search for K-12 student accounts until an administrator explicitly enables them. The company says it will share more detail about controls and timing in the coming months.

Google clarified that administrators can switch the services on individually, so a school can enable Search without enabling the separate Gemini app. Check access by student group and explain what AI tools pupils can use in lessons and for independent work.

Guided Learning reaches Classroom and Search

Guided Learning is now available in Google Classroom globally. Teachers can assign guided study using class materials and see insights into how students use the activity.

Google is also piloting Guided Learning in Search with selected US schools later this month. When Search recognises a homework-style query, it aims to coach students through a problem step by step. Google has not announced a UK pilot.

Check the Search experience

Google says AI Mode and AI Overviews will be part of its Guided Learning plans for Search. It has not yet published the detailed school controls for these features. Test a student account and check what AI summaries and source links appear before you set classroom expectations.

The announcement covers K-12 student accounts, and the Search pilot is limited to selected US schools. UK schools should check their own Google Workspace for Education settings and look for confirmed rollout details before changing local policy.

Make the rules clear to students: when AI support is allowed, how to check an answer and where to look for sources if a tool is unavailable.

Have you checked what a student account currently shows when it searches for homework help?
